Nursery - 1st Grade 

*Age 4 and up*

Session 1, July 3th-7th: Science Starts Here! - Register Now

Fulfill your curious side and build your scientific skills through hands-on experiments and activities. Discover the science behind magnets, sound and light. Mix up some gooey concoctions in our chemistry lab, design you own bubble wand and more!.

 

Session 2, July 10th-14th: Jr. Engineers - Register Now

Put your thinking caps on and get ready to build! Learn how science plays a role in the designing of bridges, boats, skyscrapers and more. Design your own race car, make something that flies, and work with your fellow campers to build the strongest structure.

 

Session 3, July 17th-21st: Space is the Place- Register Now

Go beyond our earth’s atmosphere and explore all the amazing things found in our solar system. Learn how rockets work and how astronauts live on the International Space Station. Take a trip into Starlab, our portable planetarium, to get an up close look at the planets, stars, asteroids and more that make our galaxy great.

 

Session 4, July 24th-28th: Marine Madness - Register Now

More than 70% of our earth’s surface is covered in water! Explore the beachfront of Manhasset Bay and discover the plants and animals found there. Prepare to get sandy and wet as you catch fish, dig for crabs, and discover what lurks near our shores.

 

Session 5, July 31st-August 4th: Animals & Ecosystems- Register Now

Discover how all plants and animals, from the smallest beetle, to the tallest tree, all play a crucial part in their habitats. Interact with SMLI’s live animal collection and explore our 36-acre preserve like a true ecologist. Our furry friends can’t wait to meet you!

 

Session 6, August 7th-11th: Wilderness Explorers Club - Register Now

What makes a magnet stick? How are bubbles formed? Fulfill your curious side as we explore the science behind these mysteries. Be a Forensic Scientist for a day as you search for clues and collect evidence to solve a mystery with your classmates.

 

Session 7, August 14th-18th: Blast to the Past - Register Now

Could you live as the pioneers did? Learn how making everyday items such as candles, soap and butter were different before the invention of modern technology. Discover how to enjoy the wilderness as we build shelters, learn to identify edible plants, and build a fire. Come dressed for an outdoor adventure every day!

 

Session 8, August 21st-25th: Science A to Z - Register Now

Do you love all areas of science? Then this is the week for you! From astronomy to zoology, there’s no area of science we can’t explore. Campers will get the opportunity to choose the topics we study throughout the week.



Camp Info

  • Camp Hours:

    Check-in 9:30 a.m - 10:00 a.m.
    Camp runs 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.
  • Extended Hours:

    A.M. 8:30-9:30 a.m. ($10/day)  
    P.M. 3:00-4:00 p.m. ($10/day)
    Both A.M. and P.M.: $15/day)
  • Museum Gift Shop:

    On Fridays, campers will visit the gift shop.  All items in the shop are science-related, educational, and fun! Prices range from $0.25 to $20.
  • Snacks:

    Remember to pack lunch for your child! With the exception of Wednesday and Friday of each week, and any overnight experience during the summer, SMLI does not provide meals to campers. However, snacks of fruit, chips, and cookies (nut-free), priced at $0.50-$1.00, are available daily during lunch recess.
  • Charge Accounts:

    Parents may choose to make a deposit into a “charge account” from which campers may draw funds during the week to purchase snacks, beverages, and gift shop items. Parents may list any guidelines and/or restrictions for this account (e.g., no soda, no toys, etc.).
  • Pizza Day:

    Every Wednesday is pizza day! For $6, your child may choose to have pizza, fruit juice, and cookies. Purchase is optional.
  • Barbecue Day:

    On Friday of each week, we fire up the grill for our campers. Friday’s menu (for $6 per child) includes a hamburger or hotdog, fruit juice, and a dessert. (Purchase is optional.)
  • T-Shirts:

    Each camper is issued a T-shirt at the start of camp. For security and safety reasons, we strongly encourage campers to wear an official camp T-shirt every day. Additional shirts are available for $10 each.
