Long Island Raiders
Adventure Camp - 5th Grade and Up
August 3rd - August 7th, 2015
With age comes knowledge and opportunity! The Science Museum is offering another session of its popular travel camp..... Long Island Raiders!
In this program we will venture outside the boundaries of the Preserve to discover science all around us. From the east end of Long Island to NYC, we will explore a new location each day. Traveling via bus, train, boat, or foot, we will be on a quest to investigate science from many different perspectives and locations.
Campers are invited to stay one night at the museum. We will go on a night hike, and grill dinner outdoors. Long Island Raiders is an innovative way to combine a "close-to-home" sleep-away experience and day-tripping. This week-long adventure will exceed the normal camp schedule of 9:30 am-3:00 pm. All admissions, lunches, dinner for the sleep-over, and transportation are included. The camp will be filled with outdoor adventures, sports, entertainments, and excursions to exciting locations. Parents will be notified when campers are on their way back to the Science Museum for pick-up, as well as what time to drop off campers each morning.
In past years we have had amazing adventures to places like: American Museum of Natural History, Splish Splash Water Park, NY Aquarium, Coney Island Cyclone, Atlantis Aquarium, and Empire Kayak. In 2015 we are planning: (trips are subject to change and will be finalized in the summer).
Weekly Fee: $825 (membership required)
There are no discounts available for Raiders. Please register early by mail, fax, or in person. Registration opens on January 1, 2015. Registration is strictly limited to 12 participants, so register early to guarantee your spot in this adventure filled week.
Assistant Counslor Program
Teenagers ages 14-17 who are interested in learning how to be a counselor at SMLI are welcome to apply for a position in the Science Museum's new Assistant Counselor Program. This training program is designed to help young teens develop communication and leadership skills while working with our younger campers. Guided by SMLI's experienced staff, assistant counselors will help out with classroom tasks, gain experience planning activities for children, and learn the responsibility that comes along with being a role model. Assistant counselors can earn a $50 stipend per week for each successful week "on the job." Weekly evaluations to be reviewed with assistant counselors will provide the feedback you need to have a successful summer and the tools for becoming a future leader.
For a packet outlining the Assistant Counselor Program in further detail, all interested parties should contact:
