SMLI CIT PROGRAM

The SMLI CIT (counselor-in-training) program offers campers aged 13-16 (completed grades 8, 9, 10, or 11) a chance to enjoy all camp activities while gaining valuable experience and leadership skills.

We’ve always found that the best counselors are “home grown”: former campers who bring their experience with SMLI Summer Camp and love of the building, grounds, and activities to the next generation of children.

Our CIT program acts as a bridge between being a camper and SMLI staff. While CITs are preferred for counselor positions, employment is not guaranteed. Most CITs spend two years in the program before qualifying for a counselor position.

Requirements:

  • Completed at least 8th grade by June 2024

  • At least one year experience as camper at a day or overnight camp (SMLI preferred)

What We Expect of You:

  • Reliability and Responsibility: CITs are expected to be at camp every day for the weeks they are registered. They may arrive/depart during normal camp hours, but can also come earlier for more experience/training in camp preparations

  • Enthusiasm and Leadership: Aside from assisting SMLI educators, CITs also serve as role models, “older siblings,” and friends to the young campers in their assigned groups. They’ll look to you for guidance, reassurance, and passion towards the many activities throughout the summer. CITs should always be helpful and friendly!

  • Flexibility and Positive Attitude: While CITs are typically assigned groups based on their abilities and preferences, assignments may change week-to-week as needed. CITs are expected to approach all group assignments with a positive attitude and willingness to learn the unique considerations of each group.

  • Attendance at our Summer Camp 2024 orientation to receive training and guidelines alongside your fellow CIT's prior to the start of camp.

What You Can Expect of Us:

  • Hands-on experience working with professional educators and counselors

  • Training and experience in working with children, including communication and behavior management

  • A complementary SMLI t-shirt

  • Complementary Pizza on Fridays

  • Pending performance:

    • A letter of recommendation

    • Experience that may lead to a paid position as an SMLI Camp Counselor

To Apply:

  • Applicants are suggested to commit to at least four weeks of summer camp. Consecutive weeks are preferred. With limited spots available, preference will be towards longer committed applicants.

  • Please send the following to info@smli.org:

    • A personal statement about yourself noting your experience with camp(s) and children, as well as your interest in becoming a CIT

    • A letter of reference from a teacher or guidance counselor from your school

  • Applicants will also have an in-person or Zoom interview with an SMLI staff member after submitting their application
