ABOUT
Give your mother the gift of Nature this Mother’s Day! On the Saturday before Mother’s Day, May 10th, The Long Island Conservancy will be hosting “Mother Nature Day” at The Science Museum of Long Island. An assortment of native plants will be on offer for sale, mostly wildflowers, and in particular our three native milkweeds:
At Mother Nature Day, we will offer visitors a tour of the grounds so that you can see for yourself the work being done at Leeds Pond Preserve to restore Nature. What native plants and trees have been planted? What invasive plants are being removed?
Here, you can learn what we are doing to bring back The American Chestnut on their grounds. A blight brought in by a Chinese Chestnut tree in 1904 wiped out several billion of these trees within a couple of decades, but through a scientific advance, there is now hope that we can return this majestic forest giant. That could start right here on Long Island. The story of the American Chestnut is a tragic one, but we are resolved in our efforts to bring back this forest giant.
Come join us then at The Science Museum of Long Island, located in Leeds Pond Preserve in Port Washington, on Saturday, May 10th from 10 to 2. Reacquaint yourself with Mother Nature, and bring some Nature home for your mother and for our pollinators!
